Zoe Lovatt-Cooper is regarded as one of the finest exponents of her chosen instrument - the flugel horn.

She originates from Cornwall and started playing the Flugel horn in the St Dennis Band learner’s group at the age of 6. She soon progressed into the youth band and was part of the senior band when it gained promotion from 4th to championship section within 6 years.

Zoe joined the National Youth Brass Band in 2005 and enjoyed 11 courses where she gained invaluable experience and knowledge from top class sectional tutors and world class conductors. During her time with the National Youth Band she held the principal flugel seat for 9 courses and won the prestigious Harry Mortimer Solo Contest.

Zoe studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and after completing her first year she was awarded the Harry Mortimer Memorial Trust, Brass Student of the Year. In 2010, Zoe joined the Tredegar Town Band and was part of a unique double, winning both the Grand Shield and the British Open in the same year.

Zoe joined Black Dyke Band in November 2010 as its flugel soloist. In 2014 she won the prize for the Best Soloist at the British Open followed by the prize for the Best Instrumentalist at the National Championships of Great Britain five weeks later. Zoe enjoys travelling the world as a solo artist, leading workshops, clinics and masterclasses.

Zoe is a sought after flugel tutor, working regularly with National Youth organisations and various international summer schools. The Brass Band Summer School is delighted to welcome Zoe, as a visiting guest tutor, to its 2025 summer course.
