By Course Conductor - Richard Evans
“Choosing suitable music for our wonderful Summer School is quite a fascinating task, I know whatever I choose some of my friends, or friend, usually on the flugel row will comment; 'this is too hard!!' but I answer, with a smile; 'play what you can, then leave the rest out!!' and, in reality, that is the criteria I work to. Our delegates somehow accept the challenges they are given and, as long as they have enjoyed attempting some very difficult music surely our aims are fulfilled. However, I am aware also, of a satisfaction we feel when we perform a piece of a higher standard than usual and so, carefully select music which I feel is within our collective abilities, whether with Shakespeare, Hathaway or the massed band. I try to choose a balance between new music and the more traditional; I also like to unearth a piece very few know.
Yes, I realise I can never please everyone with my selection, but there is a lot of soul searching over many weeks, before I finally publish the list.”
